De rotskruiper (Tichodroma muraria) is een bijzondere vogel: hij kruipt tegen steile rotswanden op in bergachtige gebieden. Ooit, jaren geleden, zag ik er eentje in Oostenrijk, maar heel ver weg, als een klein nietig stipje. In de zomer verblijven rotskruipers op grote hoogte, maar in de winter zoeken ze het ook lager, bijvoorbeeld op de rotswand van het dorpje Les Baux-de-Provence, net buiten de Camargue. Dit dorpje ligt op een oeroude rots die vol zit met fossiele schelpen. Hier stroomde ooit een oerrivier en de sporen daarvan zie je nog in de rotsformatie. Het water sleep de rotsen af of holde de kalkstenen uit. Als je er goed op let, zie je die invloeden meteen. Terwijl de rest van ons gezin het toeristisch vermaak in het dorpje opzocht, wandelde ik langs de rots. Een wandeling van ongeveer twee kilometer waarbij je voortdurend tegen de rotswand aankijkt. De rotskruiper kon ik niet vinden, maar gelukkig stond er een Fransman met een telelens naar boven te turen. Daar kon maar één ding betekenen! En jawel hoor, de Tichodrome vertoonde zich aan het tweekoppige publiek!

The wallcreeper (Tichodroma muraria) is a special bird: it crawls up steep rock walls in mountainous areas. Once, years ago, I saw one in Austria, but very far away, like a tiny dot. In the summer, rockcreepers stay at a high altitude, but in the winter they also live on lower sites, for example on the rock wall of the village of Les Baux-de-Provence, just outside the Camargue. This village is located on an ancient rock that is full of fossil shells. An ancient river once flowed here and the traces of it can still be seen in the rock formation. The water dragged the rocks or hollowed out the limestones. If you pay attention to it, you can immediately see those influences. While the rest of our family was looking for tourist entertainment in the village, I walked along the rock. A walk of about two kilometers where you constantly look at the rock wall. I couldn't find the wallcreeper, but luckily there was a Frenchman with a telephoto lens, peering up. There could only mean one thing! And sure enough, the Tichodrome showed itself to its audience of two birdwatchers!
