Описание: King County’s contractor for the Rainier Wet Weather Storage Facility used a construction method called microtunneling to dig a tunnel for a new sewer pipe that is 140 feet long and 60 inches wide. During microtunneling, a pipe is pushed through the ground by hydraulic jacks. A machine in front of the pipe guides the pipe and removes soil as the pipe is pushed forward. The soil is mixed with a fluid and this mixture is pumped up to the surface where the soil and fluid are separated and reused or recycled. By using the microtunneling method, King County was able to reduce impacts to the public, complete the pipe installation in weeks rather than months, and allowed the contractor to complete the tunnel without open trenching, which would have required road closures.
