I spent three nights solo dispersed camping near the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado as temperatures plummeted into the low 20s. Braving the freezing cold in an Eskimo ice fishing tent, I set out for a solo night hike to capture the most insane astrophotography I've ever seen.
Welcome back! In this episode, I’m pushing my winter camping limits near the Great Sand Dunes. Dispersed camping in Colorado during the shoulder season is a completely different beast—think shifting sands, relentless wind, and bone-chilling 20-degree weather.
To survive the night, I ditched the standard tent for my Eskimo Outbreak ice fishing tent. These insulated shelters are game-changers for heat retention, but they require some modifications since they are originally designed for ice and not sand/dirt. Between the solo night hike into the heart of the dunes and the crystal-clear Milky Way views, this was an unforgettable (and freezing) experience.
