Disability insurance companies use social media sites to find out information about you in an effort to deny your disability claim. After a simple search, the adjuster may be able to find out a large amount of information about you. However, social media sites are where people have more direct control over what information about them is online.

An example of how this may sink your claim is the posting of vacation pictures on Facebook or a similar site. Typically, you will post a good picture of yourself doing something fun. Most people don’t post the pictures of the days you were tired or could not get out of bed. The problem is that the insurance company will then cut off benefits saying this snapshot of your life shows that you can do more than you originally said you could do. They may even imply that you participated in activities of which you were only a bystander due to your disability.

It will be important that you keep your privacy settings at the maximum level. You should not share information with everyone, and you should not be “friends” with people you do not know. Better advice may be to refrain from posting things unless they reflect your true disability. Also, keep a journal and document your days and how you were actually feeling in case the insurance company finds a picture that does appear to contradict how you were truly feeling.
