In 1984, Otrivin (sometimes branded as Otrivine in some markets) marketing included a prominent print and billboard advertising campaign featuring a garden gnome. The product also received its first marketing authorization in the UK and Ireland that same year.
Key Marketing Aspects in 1984
"Specialist in nose care" Tagline: The campaign used the memorable tagline, "Otrivine. Specialist in nose care".
The Garden Gnome Visual: A key visual for the print and billboard campaign, created by the agency Leagas Delaney, depicted a garden gnome surrounded by flowers. The use of a gnome, which is kept outdoors, was intended to associate the product with hay fever relief.
Long-Lasting Presence: One particular billboard from this 1984 campaign gained recent media attention for reportedly remaining on display in London's Charing Cross underground station for 40 years, an anomaly attributed to its being under a plastic cover and away from natural light.
Product Authorization: On May 24, 1984, Otrivine Child Nasal Drops received their first marketing authorization, according to records from the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA).
Otrivin, which contains the active ingredient xylometazoline, was originally launched in 1956 by the Swiss pharmaceutical company Ciba
