Palästinalied in Mediaeval Irish | The Skaldic Bard

Описание: Here’s the one and only Palästinalied (or Aṁar inna Pelistína!) once again, translated this time from Middle High German into Middle Irish. I decided to make this one in honour of an early ancestor/relative of mine, my fellow Daly clansman Muireadhach Albanach O’Dálaigh, an Irish crusader-bard who took part in the Fifth Crusade (you can read about him on Wikipedia if your curiosity is piqued). I finish the song with a short excerpt in Old Irish and Latin from the legendary prayer St. Patrick’s Breastplate, as it fits the theme pretty well.

Anyone who’s ever taken a look at early Irish literature will tell you that Old and Middle Irish are, frankly, unbelievably complicated languages. Whether it’s the verb paradigm – complete with suppletion, infixes, deponence, and a quadruple system of inflection (absolute, conjunct, prototonic and deuterotonic) – nigh unpredictable consonant mutations, infixed pronouns, or prepositional morphology, there are a number of things to trip you up. This makes it pretty difficult to piece the language together. I use attested forms wherever possible and only reconstruct where necessary.

Given the complexity of the language, in striving to keep the meaning as faithful to the German original as possible, I had to compromise a little on the rhyming scheme, relying on half-rhymes in places and adjusting it to a broad ABCBDDD scheme instead of the usual ABABCCC.

While the orthography is similar to modern Irish – though I opt for the more traditional diacritic dot instead of ‘h’ to mark lenition – the pronunciation is quite different. The dental fricatives θ and ð are preserved, and the individual vowels are generally stronger and more pronounced than its progeny.

Despite the difficulty, it was good fun to work through this translation. I hope you enjoy this attempt to pay respects to the little-known Irish crusaders of the mediaeval era.
