Sorry for the late video- yesterday the low light, rain and noisy family prevented me from doing any recording! Here it is, though: my interpretation of the six o’clock whistle from British TV program ‘Chigley’, part of the Trumptonshire trilogy. The serieses (serieseses? serieii?) were produced by Gordon Murray and narrated by Brian Cant, and the beautiful music that accompanies the animation holds many special memories for me. My favourite songs used to be ‘Time Flies By’ and the army truck song, but now with my increasing interest in mechanical music I have grown very fond of the tunes played by the music box in Camberwick Green, and by Lord Belborough’s street organ at the end of each Chigley episode. The former is still too complicated for me, but the latter is now one of my favourite tunes to play!
The drum loop was programmed on my Pocket Operator PO-33, a remarkable piece of equipment that somehow squeezes a sampler, a synthesizer, a drum machine and a 16-step sequencer all into a piece of circuit board about the size of a small calculator. To keep a degree of analogueness, I used some particularly percussive samples from my Olivetti Lettera 32 typewriter. And by the way, the drums are supposed to carry on at the end like that. It's how the original tune goes.
