On the 40th day of Christmas, the feast of the Purification / Presentation of Our Lord, this traditional Catholic sermon reflects on obedience—in the Church, in the family, and in marriage.
Beginning from the Gospel of the Presentation (Simeon, Anna, and the Holy Family in the Temple), the priest unpacks the “obedience of faith” from Romans and then dives into Ephesians 5 and Colossians 3: what it really means for wives to “submit” and for husbands to “love” as Christ loves the Church.
Rather than flattening Catholic teaching into a harsh caricature, this talk highlights the mutual submission “in Christ”, the man’s duty of sacrificial leadership, and the woman’s dignity as wife, mother, and companion. Drawing on St. John Chrysostom, Pope Pius XI, and the example of Dietrich & Alice von Hildebrand (“soap dish love”), the priest challenges traditional Catholic men to live headship as cruciform love, not domination.
If you’ve heard “wives, be submissive” a thousand times but not nearly enough about “husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the Church,” this is for you.
What This Sermon Covers
Why obedience is hard for American Catholics today
Scandals, Protestantism, “chummy” priesthood, and the crisis of fatherhood
Obedience as love in action, not mere rule-following
