The NP203, found in 70s trucks, is a robust but heavy chain-driven transfer case with a low-range box. It features a full-time four-wheel-drive system, which can impact fuel economy.
The low-range box is the most valuable part of the NP203, as it can be detached and used in front of an NP205 to create a doubler with both 2:1 and 4:1 low ranges.
While the NP203 is a full-time case, part-time kits are available to convert it to a part-time four-wheel-drive system, improving fuel efficiency.
