Tiwi means “two islands” and refers to Melville and Bathurst Islands, separated by Apsley Strait. TIWI ISLANDS are a unique slice of Australia, with a rich cultural history, friendly Aboriginal community, and a passion for AFL football - the Tiwi Islands is a destination like no other!
It’s a 2½hr (80km) ferry service across the Arafura Sea from Darwin to reach this unique haven, nicknamed the ‘Islands of Smiles’. There are a range of guided tour options, but we chose to do a self-guided tour of the Wurrumiyanga Township. With our trusty information brochure in hand, we set off to explore the town and main visitor attractions:
Tiwi Oval
Old Church & WWII Precinct
Culture Museum
Tiwi Design Art Centre
No Northern Territory experience is truly complete unless you visit the Tiwi Islands!
Time to hit the road!
