The Chaliyar River, also known as the Beypore River, is the fourth-longest river in Kerala, India, stretching 169 kilometers from its origin in the Nilgiri Mountains to its confluence with the Arabian Sea near Beypore. Unique among many rivers in the state, it maintains a year-round flow, making it a vital source of water for drinking and agriculture in the Malappuram and Kozhikode districts. Historically significant as a trade route, especially for timber from the famous Nilambur teak plantations, the Chaliyar also boasts natural goldfields along its banks and is a hub for tourism and water sports, including the annual Malabar River Festival. However, despite its ecological and economic importance, the river faces significant pollution challenges from urbanization, industrialization, and inadequate waste management, impacting its water quality and the livelihoods of communities dependent on it.
Malappuram Boat Tragedy - Eight students were drowned when a ferry carrying them across the Chaliyar river at Moorkanad, Areekode in Malappuram district, capsized on 4 November, 2009. The accident occurred in the evening when the students were returning home from school. The victims were Plus One and Plus Two students in the 16-18 age groups. The bodies were buried on Thursday.
