East Bay Regional Park Police K9 Colt working a large open area trail. These can be difficult because the horizon is so far off that the dogs easily get distracted by any movement or air scent. Colt works this really well, though. He is an example of a heads up tracker. He spends a lot of time with his head at chest level and periodically sampling close to the ground.
Contrary to popular belief, dogs do not have to track nose buried in the ground. Depending on the surface and conditions, they easily detect odor from several inches to a foot or more off the ground with little to no effort. One must only study wolves and coyotes in the act of tracking and see similar behavior. However, that being said, it can be a bit more difficult to read and handlers must spend more time reading other body language indicators such as ears, tail, gait, and general consistency.
