Cornelia Fort was an aviation pioneer and became Nashville’s first female flight instructor. She was also the first U.S. pilot to encounter Japanese attackers at Pearl Harbor while training a student pilot. She joined the Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS) and died in a mid-air collision, becoming the first female pilot to die in the line of duty in American history.
The airpark was built in 1945 near her family farm. In 2011 the city of Nashville acquired the airpark and bought it under the auspices of East Nashville’s Shelby Park.
The park has a kid-friendly play area, and is used for biking, running and walking, as well as occasional special events and environmental programs. It also contains wetlands for bird habitats and amphibians.
