Fugue on the First Tone (fuga primi toni) from 8 Fuges on the Church tones.
The seven church tones are the old modes from the Gregorian era. They include the major scale we know today, then called "Ionian" and the natural minor, then called "Aeolian".
Wolfgang Carl Briegel (21 May 1626, Königsberg, Bavaria – 19 November 1712, Darmstadt, Germany) was a German organist, teacher, and composer.
His music represents the early to middle Baroque era. Other composers of this period are Buxtehude, Lully, Pachelbel and Purcell. Briegel's music is well known throughout Germany and in Scandinavia, but is rarely heard elsewhere.
The Hauptwerk pipe organ sample set is the 1993 Janke organ in the city church of Bückeburg, Germany. It is sampled by Sonus Paradisi.
