From an edition of the BBC radio series “Britain’s Cathedrals and their Music”, broadcast on 17 December 1965 and featuring the choir of Peterborough Cathedral, directed by W Stanley Vann.
John Blow was born in Newark, Nottinghamshire, in c1649. He was a chorister at the Chapel Royal and in 1669 became Organist of Westminster Abbey. As a teacher, his pupil included William Croft, Jeremiah Clarke and Henry Purcell. In 1687 he moved on to St Paul’s Cathedral as choirmaster and was appointed to the newly-created post of Composer to the Chapel Royal in 1699. “O pray for the peace of Jerusalem”, a setting of Psalm 122 verses 6-9, is one of more than 100 anthems written by Blow.
O pray for the peace of Jerusalem; they shall prosper that love thee.
Peace be within thy walls, and plenteousness within thy palaces.
For my brethren and companions' sakes, I will wish thee prosperity.
Yea, because of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek to do thee good.
