This video was taken by Point Blue biologists while conducting a pinniped survey at West End Island on the Farallon national Wildlife Refuge on 13 Sep 2013. This is one of the 254 pups that were counted this year, a 19% increase over the previous year. The total number of individuals counted on their trip to West End Island was 670, a 29% increase over 2012.
After a century of extirpation, Northern Fur Seals are making a dramatic recovery on the Farallon Islands. The first pup was observed on West End Island at the Indian Head Beach colony in 1996. Following this discovery, annual ground survey visits were made to Indian Head Beach during late August to document colony growth.
