The events, catastrophes, and social decay of the last few months has been - to say the very least - complex, painful, exhausting, eye-opening…as we live through yet another era of atrocity in the age of social media, the limitations of language become apparent. In trying to put together as intentional a music radio show as possible, this episode features mainly artists in the Palestinian & Jewish diaspora, showcasing work spanning centuries of grief, joy, displacement, and longing.
We open with a recording from Gaza in which a group sings together, a moment of hope between air raids. Cannonball Adderly’s Sabbath Prayer plays beneath their song, as James Baldwin speaks on the power of love and the struggle to be free. We move to Arab oud maestros, a prayer recited by Ethiopian Jews, and slide into more pop-centric sounds—joyous jams from Palestine, summery Ladino-tinged 90s pop from Israel, Dabke blends, pulsing techno, Jazz reminiscent of a trek through a Canaanite desert.
There is beauty, there is chaos, there are grooves and meditative moments. You may not be able to distinguish where the artist is from. What does that mean for the listener? Leave preconceived notions behind.
