Everyone knows the pyramids and the pharaohs. Far fewer know that a worker on the royal tombs once filed a formal complaint because his rations were late, and won. Or that Egyptian women could own property, sue in court, and disinherit ungrateful children without their husband's permission. Or that craftsmen at the village of Deir el-Medina produced satirical drawings of cats waiting on mice during their rest breaks, with the same skill they used to decorate the tombs of kings.
This documentary tells the story of ancient Egypt's daily life from the inside out. It follows the rhythm of the Nile flood that determined every Egyptian year, the village communities where ordinary people lived and argued and went to court, the legal rights that women held and used, the personal religion of household gods and dream manuals and letters written to the dead, and the world's first recorded workers' strike, preserved on a papyrus that is still legible today in a museum in Turin. The evidence comes not from the monuments but from the documents: the ostraca and papyri that the desert preserved, accidentally and improbably, in the rubbish heaps of a walled village in the hills west of Thebes.
