What is aType 6 wildland fire engine crew and what do they do?
A type 6 engine is a small firetruck, usually a F550 or comparable with a 300 gallon water tank and pump. These engines have 3 or 4 man crews and are usually placed a long dirt roads around the fire. They can get where big Type 1 and Type 3 engines can't. They support Hotshots and handcrews by delivering water, helping with mop up, line construction and setting up hose lays to support burns or structure protection.
Engine crews work the exact same hours and shifts as hand crews, aviation crews etc. 16 hour days with 14 day deployments with options to extend. Engine crew members have the same gear and uniforms as hotshots and handcrews but you'll usually see them around their engines or near roads.
What is a seasonal "On Call" wildland firefighter?
Seasonal Crews are usually managed by full time fire department personel. The rest of the crew may be seasonals, often other full time firefighters or timber workers, ranchers, or newwer firefighters getting their first season in. On Call means they only work on fires and when their engine gets deployed. Some seasons will offer more deployments then others. Type 6 engine crews work all over the United States so often out of state engines will be involved in the fire response.
