Finally! Pure, well documented, United States Captive Born and Bred Philippine sailfin dragons!
To say I'm feel accomplished would be a drastic understatement.
A little history to where this has all led to: 14 years ago I saw my very first photo of a Philippine sailfin dragon in Scott Corning's care guide on Reptiles Magazine's website (back then it was "The Reptile Channel.com" )whilst procrastinating on a “hobby” project in 6th grade.
12 years ago I had the privilege to work with a pair of Philippine sailfin dragons during my time as a volunteer at the Wildlife Discovery Center in Lake Forest IL.
2 years ago I finally achieved a dream of working with the species myself by acquiring some well documented, pure Philippine sailfin dragons through my close friend Aly Balles.
October 2024 my good friend Kristen Richard’s offered me the opportunity to borrow her pure, male CBB 2017 Philippine sailfin dragon produced by John Steele of Jay’s Arboreal’s from his iconic pairing “Sparticus” x “Naevia” (both which have history to Scott Corning’s wild-caught stock and imported animals brought in by Linda Switzer).
This male was imperative as there are too many undocumented “hobby” Philippine sailfin dragons, and many instances of hybridization in captivity with other species of sailfin dragons being intentionally bred to H. pustulatus.
I could not risk the possibility of hybridization.
July 10th, 2025. 23:13hrs. I witnessed the very first pip of a hatchling Philippine sailfin dragon.
Years of research, work, collaboration, mentorship, and being a student have finally paid off.
A huge thank you to:
Scott Corning (@sailfindragon.com) Your mentorship, guidance, and insight has made this possible.
Kasey Schultz (Zion Hill Exotics). Your collaboration and assistance and bouncing ideas off of each other has paid off!
Aly Balles, for whom this would not be possible (and for tolerating my hours upon hours of phone calls throughout college discussing the next 30+ years of keeping pure Philippine sailfin dragons around!). Aly is an amazing person, and someone I am beyond thankful to know.
Stay tuned everyone.
This is the first step in ensuring pure, well documented Philippine sailfin dragons stick around within herpetoculture.
