First of all, I hope you’re having a wonderful Christmas. I wanted to release this song much sooner, but it just wasn’t possible. So I hope you’re still in the holiday spirit—and I’m also sorry for what I’ve done with this song.

Frankie and Donnie… I mean, I could probably talk about them for ages. Two brothers who had a terrible life, left to depend only on each other. They were left outside an orphanage—no parents, and seemingly no future. But they stayed together. They were inseparable. They simply belonged together.

They never really celebrated Christmas, not in the real sense. Instead, they led themselves down a path of crime, stealing Christmas trees to create a Christmas they could never forget. Frankie was usually the one pushing them to look toward the future. He wanted a real goal. If they could steal more Christmas trees, they could sell them and start a new life together. They could move to a different city and live in a different way.

But this job isn’t the safest in the world, and tension rises quickly when Frankie and Donnie don’t see things the same way. Frankie is much more willing to take risks, while Donnie prefers to play it safe—he doesn’t want anyone to get hurt.

But someone does.

In a job that goes wrong, Donnie is fatally wounded. Frankie is left with all the sorrow, wondering about every decision that led them to this moment. He will never see his brother again—never see his childlike smile, or the happiness in his face when he said something funny. He will never get to show him what their future could have been.

Frankie is left alone, dreading Christmas every year because of his brother’s loss. There will never be another Christmas for him. The memories are far too painful. No more lights. No more trees. Only guilt, following him everywhere.
