In November 2025, a Polk County jury awarded more than $110 million to the family of "Baby Owen," nearly a decade after the infant suffered catastrophic injuries at an unlicensed daycare in Mena, Arkansas.
As reported by Lakyra Banks of 40/29 News, in February 2016, Daniel and Mandy Ryals dropped off their healthy 7-month-old son at "Wendy's Daycare," a facility that was operating without a license. Later that day, Owen was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Owen suffered multiple skull fractures, a detached retina that left him permanently blind, a traumatic brain injury, and other serious injuries. According to attorney Joseph Gates, who represented the family, daycare workers never explained how the child was hurt and waited hours before seeking medical help.
