How can Capoeira, a form of Brazilian martial art, help children coping with armed conflict?
“It is too early to tell but it makes the return less abrupt,” says Inah Kaloga, UNICEF Child Protection Officer in Goma. Kaloga adds that “through Capoeira, they learn that we can absorb the violence and that we can bounce back, returning once more to a normal childhood.”
On average, a Congolese child leaving an armed group remains five weeks in this “transitory halfway house”. This pilot program led by UNICEF in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo has worked with 270 former child soldiers over the past six months.
