Описание: James Kalm drops in to view Michelle Grabner’s latest exhibition at James Cohan. Having been the host to a gracious studio visit from Michelle during her curatorial preparations for the 2014 Whitney Biennial, Kalm has a favorable bias towards the artist. From the press release “Grabner references Penelope’s clever ploy of weaving by day and unweaving at night, which kept the suitors at bay in Homer’s Ithaca. Like Penelope, Grabner finds a generative space for mending, healing and woolgathering within her unique system of de-weaving and filling in.” Combined with this approach, there is also an echo of some of the most classic minimal and obsessive conceptual painters of the twentieth century like Robert Ryman, Agnes Martin and Roman Opałka. Kalm also ponders the controversy raised by a review of Grabner’s 2014 show in the New York Times, by Ken Johnson, that only adds to the richness of possible interpretations for this outing. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk
