If there were to be a single iconic species of the South Downs it would probably be the Adonis Blue.
It thrives in chalk downland, where livestock grazing creates a precise habitat.
The Adonis blue butterfly is reliant on ants who feast on a honey-like substance produced by caterpillars & protect the Adonis pupae from predators.
Without grazing, the grasses grow long, the sun doesn’t warm the anthills, & the ants abandon them.
Without managed chalk downland, we might not even have this species.
