In Part 2 of this historical formation series, we take a closer look at two fascinating Greek factions: Athens and Epirus around 250 BC. Instead of simply building strong armies, the goal is to recreate historically inspired formations and tactics and test how well they perform in Rome II Total War.
First we examine the army of Epirus under Pyrrhus, famous for its Macedonian-style phalanx supported by cavalry, hoplites, and of course the terrifying war elephants. Using a historical combined-arms formation, we attempt to surround and break a disciplined Spartan hoplite army.
After that we move to Athens, a faction best known for its navy but still capable of fielding strong hoplite armies. In this battle we test an Athenian hoplite-focused army against the elite Spartans in what can only be described as the Battle of the Hoplites. With the Spartans having the advantage in infantry, clever maneuvering and shock cavalry become the key to victory.
