In this video, I break down how I created a Blade Runner–inspired cinematic composite using DaVinci Resolve. It’s a longer, more in-depth look at my process — from filming on a green screen to compositing, masking, and rotoscoping to bring the scene to life.
I started by filming the shot against a greenscreen, then built the Blade Runner-style Hallway in Blender (not covered in this video). From there, I jumped into DaVinci Resolve to start the compositing work.
The trickiest part was rotoscoping my hair, since it blended closely with the background colours. When you’re dealing with similar but not identical tones, a few methods that help are:
Using luminance keys and colour keys to separate subtle differences in tone
Combining garbage masks with manual roto for precision around edges
and merging multiple masks
After tackling the hair, I masked my clothing and body separately, using individual masks for each area to control fine details. Then I keyed the greenscreen and finished with additional manual rotoscoping to refine the final look.
This project was a fun challenge — part experiment, part learning experience — and I hope it gives you some insight or inspiration for your own composites and creative filmmaking.
