Описание: Along convergent plate margins, arc volcanism exerts primary control on sedimentation across terrestrial to marine environments, influencing the fate of particulate sediments along Sediment Routing Systems (SRS) from source to sink. At the same time, tectonic and climatic factors shape margin relief, modulating the connectivity of sedimentary systems under volcanic influence. The nature of volcanism—composition, magnitude, and frequency—defines a “volcanic engine” within the classic SRS box model. Insights from historical eruptions, coupled with studies of ancient arc successions, have significantly advanced our understanding of volcaniclastic processes and the organization of sedimentary environments in the geological record. Yet, a comprehensive view of how volcanism and volcaniclastic processes operate as a continuum throughout the long-term evolution of magmatic arcs and SRS remains elusive. In this webinar, we will analyze the Miocene North Patagonian volcaniclastic record preserved at the foothills of the Andes to explore the environmental role of normal to unusual transient explosive volcanic periods associated with arc-derived high to low magmatic productivity states. We will discuss how volcano-magmatic processes influence the production, transfer, and preservation of primary and secondary volcaniclastic sediments as instantaneous to delayed environmental responses.
