We just transplanted 6,000 fall brassica plants — broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts — and got them out of the greenhouse before the summer heat cooked them.
This is the kind of long-range planning every farm has to do to stay productive through the fall season. This video gives you a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to stay ahead on a working farm. From using black mulch for weed control and easier irrigation, to the careful timing needed to get these cool-weather crops in the ground during the heat of July, it’s all about planning today for the harvest tomorrow.
Along the way, we also do a little tomato trellising, check in on a small tomato trial from Pan American Seeds, and take a quick walk through our first sweet corn patch — including a mistake I made during planting that taught me a valuable lesson.
