Flying the Douglas R4D - A Pilot's Perspective

Following Ready 4 Duty's third and final appearance at a Shuttleworth Collection Air Show last weekend, we spoke to Curt Lewis - the PIC for the recent Duxford and Old Warden displays. Curt talks about his experiences flying DC-3/C-47 types as well as what it's like displaying such a large aircraft at a small aerodrome like Old Warden.

Until the end of this month, the R4D will be taking part in air shows, flypasts, as well conducting tours and selling merchandise in the UK and western Europe as part of the Commemorative Air Force's 'Navy to Victory' tour - which celebrates the 250th anniversary of the United States Navy; the 90th anniversary of the first flight of the Douglas DC-3; and the 100th anniversary of Pratt & Whitney. Some notable air show appearances remaining are the Royal International Air Tattoo (as a static asset) and flying in the displays at the Duxford American Flying Day and the Old Buckenham Air Show.

Today, 4th July 2025, the R4D will be returning to the Netherlands to make one final appearance on the continent before a few more UK displays and then the journey back to Texas.
