Formed in Newry, Ireland, the Four of Us is powered by the brothers Brendan Murphy (vocals) and Declan Murphy (guitar). Brendan formed the band with his sibling while studying law; he eventually quit school to devote his time to creating music. Virtually unknown in the U.S., the Four of Us are actually one of Ireland's most successful rock groups. In 1989, the band released their first LP, Songs for the Tempted. The single "Mary" -- a vivid tale of domestic abuse which was actually named after a girl that Brendan had a crush on -- rocketed to No. 1 on the Irish charts. As a result, Songs for the Tempted went double platinum in Ireland; it also won Best Album of the Year at the Irish Music Awards. The Four of Us were able to plunge into the mainstream while keeping their devout collegiate following intact. The Album Man Alive, which was voted by Q Magazine as one of that year's Top 50 records, In 1999, the Four of Us returned with Classified Personal. The band made a commercial comeback in 2003 with the single "Sunlight", receiving heavy airplay and critical acclaim for a track that was not available for sale until a year later on the album Heaven & Earth.

The Bottom Line On The 4 Of Us (Vicar Street Preview)
Indeed there are. Original members Brendan and Declan are still very much at the heart of things, They've been round a while, haven't they?
Since 1989. It took a while for Songs For The Tempted to pick up momentum but once it did they were away, even if they recall their Dublin debut in Sides with something approaching horror.
What happened?
It was about their fifth ever gig; the audience was comprised of media and other bands. Things went pear-shaped.
It obviously didn't do them any permanent harm?
No. Within a year they were playing sold-out shows at the SFX and had screaming girls beating on the sides of their van.
Surely they still don't get screaming girls at their gigs?
Er, no. However, there's still a very strong female presence in the crowd who go misty-eyed when Brendan hits great songs like She Hits Me, Sunlight, Change and a rather popular ditty called Mary.
And how does the new stuff stand up?
At the show I saw in Limerick a couple of weeks ago you could have heard a pin drop during Blue from the new album, a gorgeous and moving song which recalled The Blue Nile or the latter-day Trash Can Sinatras at their very best.
