For GenX ers from the state of Iowa, today’s guests were part of one of the greatest teams in University of Iowa football history.
Hap Peterson and Jay Norvell played on the defensive side of the ball for the Hawkeyes from 1981 to 1985.
The 1981–1985 Iowa Hawkeye football teams, led by head coach Hayden Fry, transformed the program from a long-term loser into a perennial Big Ten contender, highlighted by three major bowl appearances (including two Rose Bowls) and the first outright Big Ten title in 27 years.
1981: "From Punchline to Pasadena"
Big Ten Co-Champions: Finished 8-4 (6-2 Big Ten), earning their first Rose Bowl appearance since 1958 and first winning season since 1961.
"Giant Killer" Upset Wins: Started the season by stunning #7 Nebraska 10-7. Later defeated #6 UCLA 20-7 and #5 Michigan 9-7 (the first win in Ann Arbor in 34 years).
Key Personnel: Defensive end Andre Tippett and punter Reggie Roby were named Consensus All-Americans.
1982: Proving 1981 Was No Fluke
Peach Bowl Champions: Finished 8-4 and defeated Tennessee 28-22 in the Peach Bowl.
First Bowl Win in Decades: This was the program's first bowl victory since the 1959 Rose Bowl.
Key Performance: Chuck Long threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns in the Peach Bowl.
1983: Building Momentum
Record: Finished 9-3, marking another strong season under Fry.
Signature Wins: Highlighted by a 77-yard touchdown pass to seal a win over Penn State.
1984: Continued Competitiveness
Record: Finished 8-3-1, with another appearance in the top-tier of the Big Ten. Ranked No. 16 in the final AP Poll, the team featured standout quarterback Chuck Long, who led the nation in passing efficiency, and running backs Ronnie Harmon (907 yards) and Owen Gill (920 yards). The season culminated in a 55-17 victory over Texas in the Freedom Bowl.
1985: The #1 Team
Big Ten Champions: Went 10-2 (7-1 Big Ten) and won their first outright Big Ten title in 27 years.
Ranked #1: Spent most of October ranked No. 1 in both major polls, reaching that position for the first time in two decades.
Iconic Win: A last-second field goal by Rob Houghtlin defeated #5 Michigan 12-10 on Oct. 19.
Rose Bowl: Advanced to the 1986 Rose Bowl, capping an era that solidified Iowa as a national force.
Key 1981–1985 Legacy Highlights
Hayden Fry: Transformed the program and introduced the iconic Tiger Hawk logo.
Chuck Long: Ranked as one of the era's best quarterbacks, starting all five seasons in some capacity.
Defense: Built a reputation for tough, stifling defense, holding opponents to school-record low rushing numbers in 1981.
Bowl Success: Compiled a 2-2 record in major bowl games (including two Roses) over this span.
