Labor: The History of Unrest and the Struggle for Justice
The 2025 MAYDAY! Peace Conference at Gustavus Adolphus College explores how work has changed in the face of societal and technological change and how workers have responded to the forces that shape their labor.
“MAYDAY!” is the international distress signal used to indicate life-threatening emergencies. May Day (May 1st) is also International Workers Day, honoring workers and commemorating the efforts of labor movements around the world.
This year’s topic of labor is in honor of late History professor Greg Kaster, who served as the MAYDAY! Conference panel moderator in 2022 and whose research and teaching interests included labor history and the rhetoric of masculinity and labor in the 19th century.
