Sugar Price Hike | India Allows Duty-Free Sugar Imports: Can Pakistan Sell Its Surplus to India?
India has opened a temporary window for duty-free sugar imports—but Pakistani sugar may still be unable to enter the Indian market. India has allowed 10 lakh metric tonnes of raw sugar imports at zero duty until October 31 to improve domestic supplies and control rising sugar prices ahead of the festive season.
At the same time, Pakistan is reportedly holding more than 1.2 million tonnes of surplus sugar and is looking for export markets. India’s proximity could make it an attractive destination, but existing India-Pakistan trade restrictions remain a major hurdle.
In this video, we explain why India is importing sugar, why Pakistani sugar cannot automatically access the Indian market, how lower domestic production could affect prices, and what this could mean for the Indian and Pakistani sugar markets.
Key topics covered:
India’s 10 lakh tonne duty-free sugar import decision
Pakistan’s surplus sugar stocks
India-Pakistan sugar trade restrictions
India’s domestic sugar production outlook
Rising sugar prices and festive-season demand
Impact of imports on Indian sugar prices
What could happen to India-Pakistan sugar trade
