OGDEN POINT - Ogden Point is a hot bed of tourists and cruise ships between May and September.
During the cruise off-season those busy piers, are often empty.
But Western Stevedoring has found a new and successful way to use the docks and make some nice clean cash.
The company is cleaning cargo ships, an enormous project that requires a lot of elbow grease.
The ships can carry as much as 70,000 tonnes of goods, and the holds need to be cleaned thoroughly between trips, to ensure there is no cross contamination.
Twelve ships have been cleaned between September and now, averaging about three days each. The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority says it charges $1200 a day for the ships to be in port, a boost in a slow season.
The GVHA says there is minimal waste produced from the service. It says the rags are properly disposed of at a recycling facility.
The service will start up again in September when the cruise season ends.
