Randklev Bridge Repair 🇸🇯 (2024-05)

There are actually two bridges at the location: The current steel truss rail bridge was opened in 1957. It replaced an old bridge next to it built 1896, which is no longer serving the railway. The 172 m-long bridge carries the main line and only electrified railway between Oslo and Trondheim.
The (newer) Randklev Bridge on the Dovre Line near Ringebu, Norway was damaged by flooding during storm "Hans" in August 2023. The large volumes of water in the Gudbrandsdalslågen river destroyed one of the bridge pier foundations, causing two bridge spans to collapse into the river.
The owner of the structure, Bane Nor concluded that it was feasible to repair the bridge spans and that the works would be carried out at site in winter 2024. By this method, train operation could be re-established within the shortest period of time (i.e. nine months).
The bridge elements weigh 270 tons each. The crane used is a Liebherr LR 11350 crawler crane. It can lift 1350 tons. The mega crane consists of many parts that were transported by ship from Denmark to Norway and then on trucks to Ringebu. There it was assembled and operated on an embankment in the Gudbrandsdalslågen river so that it could lift the bridge elements onto land. The large crane has a total weight of approximately 1450 tons.
The crane boom that lifted the bridge elements is 84 meters long. It has a lifting capacity of 329 tons at a distance of 58 meters, i.e. the distance between the center of the crane and the hoist, i.e. the middle bridge part (span #2) of the Randklev Bridge.
Winter construction measures had to be implemented due to the harsh weather at that time of the year.
