Keratosis Pilaris (KP) is a common skin condition that presents as small pink or red rough bumps on the outer arms, legs, bottom and cheeks. It’s due to a plug of keratin that accumulates around the hair follicle. It can be associated with eczema and rosacea and is often referred to as “chicken skin” or “strawberry skin”.
Here are the at home treatments needed to control these symptoms.
1. Regularly exfoliate affected areas with an AHA/BHA. There are many scrubs available in the shower including First Aid Beauty KP bump eraser. Can also use manual exfoliation with a brush or exfoliating mitt/glove. Do this several times a week but may tolerate doing it daily on the body.
2. Apply a cream with urea, lactic acid or salicylic acid daily. Some examples include amlactin and cerave SA cream. Make sure to use sun protection too!
3. Still have the bumps? Add a retinoid like adapalene (which is over the counter in the US) or a prescription retinoid like Tazorac a few times a week. Don’t use if pregnant.
4. There is no studied diet that is effective for keratosis pilaris but anecdotally some describe cutting gluten, sugar or dairy to help their symptoms. Making sure your diet has enough vitamin A and omega 3 fatty acids.
5. Laser hair removal can permanently help keratosis Pilaris by removing the hair follicle and thus preventing keratin plug from accumulating. Not everyone is eligible for laser hair removal.
