Guitarist and composer Gentil Montaña (1942–2011) is one of the most important figures in Colombian and Latin American guitar music. Born in Ibagué, Colombia, he was deeply rooted in his country’s musical traditions while developing a refined and expressive classical voice. His work beautifully merges the elegance of concert music with the rhythms and melodies of Colombian folklore.

Throughout his life, Montaña was an accomplished performer, composer, and teacher, shaping the modern identity of Colombian guitar music. His series of Colombian Suites stands as his most enduring contribution—works that elevate traditional forms through harmonic richness and expressive depth.

The Suite Colombiana No. 2, the most famous of the series, consists of four movements:
I. El Margariteño - Pasillo
II. Guabina Viajera
III. Bambuco
IV. Porro

Each movement captures the essence of Colombia’s musical soul, reimagined through Montaña’s distinctive artistry. The Porro has become especially beloved for its vibrant energy and brilliance, yet the entire suite demands a high level of technical mastery and musical understanding. It remains one of the cornerstones of the Latin American guitar repertoire.
