How to Study the Bible:Understanding Sin, Freedom, and God's Better Way Week 5 3/2/25
Main Premise: When we misunderstand sin's origin and impact, we blame God for what humanity has corrupted.
I. Creation: God's Perfect Blueprint
God created everything from nothing with purpose (Genesis 1:1-3, Hebrews 11:3)
God's original creation was perfect and without defect (Genesis 1:31)
Humans were uniquely created in God's image (Psalm 139:13-16)
II. The Fall: Our Costly Rebellion
Adam and Eve chose independence from God (Genesis 3:1-7)
Sin spread to affect all creation (Romans 5:12, 19)
We demand freedom yet blame God for consequences (Romans 9:20-21)
III. Sin's Reality: Looking in the Mirror
All humans inherit a sinful nature (Romans 3:23, Jeremiah 17:9)
Sin breaks our relationship with God (Isaiah 59:2)
We often redefine sin to justify our choices (Proverbs 14:12, Isaiah 5:20)
IV. Consequences: The Unavoidable Aftermath
Sin carries inevitable results (Galatians 6:7-8)
Individual choices affect others and creation (Romans 8:20-22)
We can't demand both freedom AND protection from consequences (Genesis 11:1-9)
V. God's Better Yes: Redemption's Promise
God remained engaged with fallen creation (2 Peter 3:9, Romans 5:8)
The cross reveals God's plan of salvation (John 3:16-17)
God's boundaries protect and guide us (Psalm 19:7-11)
Living in God's Better Story: Practical Steps
1. Read God's Word as life's manual from its Designer (2 Timothy 3:16-17, Psalm 119:105)
2. Accept that sin's consequences are real (Numbers 32:23, Proverbs 13:15)
3. Trust that God's boundaries maximize joy (John 10:10, Psalm 16:11)
The SPECK Method for Bible Reading
When reading Scripture, ask yourself:
Is there a Sin to be avoided?
Is there a Promise to be claimed?
Is there an Example to follow?
Is there a Command to obey?
Is there something to Know about God?
Key Passages for Further Study
Creation and Fall: Genesis 1-3
Sin's Universal Impact: Romans 3:9-20, 5:12-21
Hope of Redemption: Romans 8:18-25, Revelation 21:1-5
Today's Challenge: Will you trust that God's "no" comes from the same heart that said "yes" to dying for you? (Romans 8:32)
