Join us on Decoded: The Future of Health with hosts Dr. Vinod Gauba and Darren Brodeur as we examine one of the most critical challenges facing genomics and artificial intelligence today, trust, governance, and global collaboration, through a conversation with Ma’n H. Zawati.
In this episode, we speak with Professor Zawati, Associate Professor and Research Director at the Centre of Genomics and Policy in the Department of Human Genetics at McGill University, and co-lead of the Regulatory and Ethics Work Stream at the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH).
The conversation explores why governance has become the common language for global collaboration in genomics and AI, and how gaps in trust, interoperability, and data diversity can limit scientific progress and deepen inequities. Professor Zawati explains how scientific bias can become embedded in both research and clinical care when data sharing and inclusivity are treated as secondary concerns.
Rather than focusing on technology alone, this discussion centers on the principles required to build trustworthy and globally relevant systems. Topics include responsible AI, transparency, accountability, benefit sharing, and emerging models such as federation and data visiting that allow collaboration without compromising local control.
This episode offers a global perspective on what it will take to ensure that advances in genomics and artificial intelligence translate into equitable health impact, and why good governance is not a barrier to innovation, but a prerequisite for it.
