Dragon Point is a narrow strip of land in Merritt Island Florida separating the Indian River Lagoon and Banana River in Brevard County. It got its name from a giant, 65 foot long, and 35 foot high dragon sculpture created by Lewis VanDercar in 1971. It was named Annie. For decades, this sculpture was a landmark for residents of Brevard County, but had fallen to disrepair and vandalism for a number of years until a storm collapsed the 20 ton concrete sculpture in 2002, completely destroying it. In its prime, it's hollow belly was enjoyed by parents and children, who would visit the sculpture as a minor attraction in the area. At one point it was extended to allow children to climb up to its head and look out its nostrils at the river. And it was also modified to breathe smoke and fire. After its collapse, there were efforts to restore the sculpture, however those fell through. More recently, investors intended to create a new dragon of equivalent size named Rojak, but no progress has been made to date.
