"Club 85 in the sleepy market town of Hitchin, Hertfordshire, is rapidly becoming a hotspot for jazz in the south of England. Although well-established for heavy rock and metal bands. The venue has quietly been hosting jazz concerts which have been well-received and extremely popular. Among the luminaries that have played the club recently is Horace Panter and his Soul Grooves ensemble. The band comprised a gnarly bunch of seasoned musicians whose careers have been steeped in jazz, soul, funk, ska, blues and plain old rock for decades. Local hero, Dave Keech fronted on a very mean looking black “stealth” trombone as well as vocals. Co-leading on horns was Chris Rand on tenor and baritone saxes. Chris is at the vanguard of young British jazz musicians: a graduate of the Guidlhall School of Music, his horn work is fresh and very exciting. Nikolaj Torp Larsen who I suspect is Sigmund Freud’s doppelganger, provided some incendiary keyboard work. Nik has been playing with The Specials for years and knows exactly how to deliver ska and funk chops from his Nord C2 organ although it seemed to me that he squeezes out a few Hammond-like prog tones as well. Jesper Lind pinned down the percussion and worked seamlessly with Horace Panter’s marvelous and insistently danceable but rock-steady bass grooves. Throughout the evening the band worked their way through some wonderful classics from Booker T, Ray Charles, The Ventures, The Meters and Stevie Wonder. Great stuff! The sold out crowd roared their approval and the band finished with “Higher Onions” -a hybrid of Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground” and Booker T Jones’ “Green Onions”."
