Dr. Milton Erickson became a legend as a genius in dealing with psychological problems but also as a man with a big heart for his family, his students and patients. In 1972 Hans-Ulrich Schachtner had a remarkable incident with a colleague that had to do with Erickson. He was so impressed by this that he immediately bought and read the recommended book „Uncommon therapy“ by Jay Haley, that focuses on Erickson’s work. Having read it, Hans-Ulrich had the strong desire to meet Milton in person. His wish was fulfilled in 1976. Hans-Ulrich came to Phoenix to see Milton from now on every winter from 1976 to 1979.  Milton revolutionized psychotherapy and hypnosis. He redefined the unconscious.

In 1976 Milton gave Hans-Ulrich Schachtner the big honor of allowing him to attend all his private sessions with patients. He was the only one to receive this privilege.

Hans-Ulrich Schachtner was a pioneer in bringing Ericksonian hypnotherapy to Europe, He translated „Hypnosis“ by Erickson/Rossi into German and was the first to give seminars in hypnotherapy for psychotherapists. He joined with some colleagues to found the first Milton Erickson institute in Munich, Germany. Many students could learn hypnotherapy there through attending workshops at the Milton Erickson institution. The idea caught on, so that many fans of this approach opened Milton Erickson institutions in many cities in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and other countries, like France and Italy.
