In this video, learn how Nick Saban, Alabama football legend and one of the most influential defensive coaches of the last 40 years, built the foundation of his defensive scheme. We'll see how he got his start, learning the game from his father while visiting Bobby Bowden and the West Virginia Mountaineers. Then, we'll see what football coverages were like in the 1970's, and what kind of defense Saban played in with the Kent State Golden Flashes. After stops at Syracuse and West Virginia, he worked for Earle Bruce at Ohio State, where things didn't quite go as planned. It all turned out for the best, though, because at his next job (Navy) he met a young DC for the New York Giants by the name of Bill Belichick. Ultimately, though, during this stage of his career Saban's biggest influence was George Perles, HC of the Michigan State Spartans, who had him running a defense inspired by the Pittsburgh Steelers' Steel Curtain defense that catapulted Joe Green, Jack Lambert, and Tony Dungy into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This defense made frequenty use of Bud Carson's Cover-2 (later modified as the "Tampa-2"), as well as the Stunt 4-3 defensive front play developed by Perles himself.
