The first thing your dermatologist assesses with your acne is figuring out which type or types you have.
Comedonal acne includes open and closed comedones (black heads and white heads) and is best treated with salicylic acid and a topical retinoid like adapalene.
Inflammatory acne includes the red, inflamed pimples and pustules. Cystic acid, hormonal acne, and acne fulminans all fall under the category of inflammatory acne.
Over the counter treatment for inflammatory acne includes benzoyl peroxide and a retinoid like adapalene.
Depending on the severity and evidence of scarring, a prescription antibiotic, spironolactone, or retinoid (eg. Tretinoin, accutane) may be needed.
