After purchasing a rundown bungalow in 2023, the homeowners demolished the property and rebuilt it as a highly insulated, low-energy home inspired by Scandinavian design. Completed in 2025, the house was carefully designed with an asymmetrical roof and distinctive gabled windows, while also considering neighbouring light and the surrounding setting.

The home is built to near Passive House levels of airtightness and is powered by renewable technology including 24 solar panels, a 33kW battery storage system and an air-source heat pump. Compared to the owners’ previous 1960s house, which used around 110kW of energy per day, this home uses roughly 5kW per day to heat.

Inside, natural materials and light-filled spaces define the design, with bamboo flooring, underfloor heating and a series of skylights bringing daylight deep into the plan. At the rear, a spacious kitchen, dining and living area opens onto the garden through large sliding doors, while a deep roof overhang helps prevent overheating during the summer months.

A thoughtful self-build that combines energy-efficient design, renewable technology and carefully considered architecture.
