Humane Society caring for Shelties dumped at Warren County park in cold weather

Описание: WARREN COUNTY, Ohio (WKRC) - Five Shetland Sheepdogs have a temporary home out of the cold, but they still have a long way to go.

The Shelties were found abandoned Jan. 23 at Caesar Creek State Park near Old Hickory Lookout.

Joanne Hurley is the executive director of the Humane Association of Warren County. She described the dogs' poor condition:

"They were not groomed very well. They had large mats, which we're currently starting to work on. They were very unsocialized. We have at least two that could possibly have some neurological deficits," Hurley said.

The Shelties constantly run in circles. That leads Hurley to believe that they've been crated for most of their lives, and even the Humane Society's small kennels are overwhelming for the dogs.

Hurley said, "I know that the warden said that he found one laying in the snow with big ice balls attached to it and frozen fur, and when he approached, it couldn't even run away properly. It could only run in circles."

There were seven dogs total who were dumped, but two of them didn't make it. After being abandoned, they ran across State Route 73 and got hit by vehicles.

Now, the dogs will need a lot of care and workers will need help with the medical bills.

"The most important thing now is that we get them to the vet. We get blood work going. We make sure there's no upper respiratory, no urinary problems, anything like that," Hurley said.

They also want to know who would do something so heartless when so many people would love to offer a forever home to the Shelties.

"So we're looking for any information. Someone has to know that someone now does not have seven dogs," Hurley said, "It did not have to be that he dumped them in the worst of weather not knowing how to defend themselves or find themselves shelter or leaving them vulnerable to predators, hit by cars. There were so many things that could've and did happen, and it just wasn't necessary."
