Hoo Fort was one of 2 circular island forts built in the River Medway in the 1860s to defend the river approaches to Chatham Dockyard. Its twin fort, Darnet, can be seen just across the channel from Hoo Ness Island. In 1871, Hoo fort was armed with eleven 9 inch Rifle Muzzled loading guns and each gun was mounted in an individual casemate.
Although the forts were disarmed and abandoned before the first world war, there was a Royal Artillery care and maintenance team there until the 1950s. In WW2 it as used as an observation post.
In August 2018, David Nolan and I went to explore the forts whilst the water levels were low enough to access the ground floor.
Whilst on the Island, I found a locker tag marked with the name J. L Cashen. If anyone has any info on him, I would be very grateful to hear from you. Im assuming it dates back to WW1 or WW2.
Hoo Fort is owned by the MOD and Peel Ports own the island.
