The reason so many struggling English students find it hard to understand real English is multifold:
🎧 no one actually teaches us HOW to understand spoken English, listening at school is a form of testing, not teaching, which is why listening plays a crucial part in the success of my students in my programme
🎧 the audio tracks most of us listen to at school have got nothing to do with how real English sounds, raw, with hesitations, background noise, a wide variety of accents and people speaking with various modalities and speed
🎧 English is a non-phonetic language, meaning what you read many times has no correlation to what you say
🎧 English prosody is governed by stress, unlike most languages; it's the constant variation of stressed and unstressed vowels that give it its rhythm, and understanding how these syllables work will help you improve your listening skills
