When the entrance to the Annex behind the bookcase was discovered, Anne and the others hiding there had been cut off from the outside world for over two years. The arrest on 4 August 1944 marked the beginning of an uncertain and fearful time.
The group was taken for interrogation by the Sicherheitsdienst and spent a few days in prison. The video shows the possible routes through Amsterdam that were taken to reach these locations.
On 8 August 1944, the people in hiding were transported from Amsterdam Central Station to transit camp Westerbork. This was the first of several Nazi camps they would have to endure.
There are many theories about how Anne was discovered, however none have been proven.
